Custom Paper Packaging: How to Choose the Right Structure

2026-09-09

What if the paper bag looks great, but it isn't actually right for what's inside?

That's an easy mistake to make. A bakery bag might only need some moisture protection. Coffee is a different story — oxygen, light and aroma all matter. And if you're packing 25 kg of industrial material, well, a nice-looking paper bag isn't going to get the job done.

That's why choosing custom paper packaging isn't just about picking a paper color or making the bag thicker. The structure underneath matters just as much.

If you're looking for a paper-based pouch that still has some of the practical features of flexible packaging, take a look at these custom paper stand up pouches. The right format and material combination can make a bigger difference than you'd expect.

8 Practical Composite Structures for Custom Paper Bags

Paper by itself doesn't do everything a modern package needs to do.

It looks good. It prints well. It gives a package that familiar paper feel. But depending on the product, it may need some help with moisture, sealing, oxygen, grease, impact, or strength.

That's where laminated and composite structures come in.

There isn't one structure that's right for every brand. And honestly, you don't want one. The better approach is to start with the product and work backward.

Here's a quick comparison before we get into the details.

Packaging Need Recommended Structure Typical Applications
Basic moisture protection Kraft Paper + PE Bakery, takeaway food, frozen food
Strong oxygen, moisture and light barrier Kraft Paper + Aluminum Foil + PE Coffee, tea, powdered foods
Premium printed appearance White Paper + PET/AL + PE Confectionery, cosmetics, gift packaging
Good barrier with metallic appearance Kraft Paper + VMPET + PE Snacks, dried fruit, pet treats
Stiffness, printability and product visibility Paper + PET + PE Bakery, candy, frozen food
Heavy-duty strength Kraft Paper + Woven PP + PE Feed, fertilizer, industrial materials
Cushioning and impact protection Kraft Paper + Bubble Film + PE Glass, ceramics, electronics
Compostable-oriented packaging Kraft Paper + PLA Organic food, eco-focused brands

1. Kraft Paper + PE Laminated Bag

Material structure: Typically 80–120 gsm kraft paper + around 15–25 μm PE coating, depending on the bag size, filling weight and sealing requirements.

Kraft Paper PE Laminated Bags-DINGLI PACK

If you need a straightforward paper bag with some moisture protection, this is usually one of the first structures worth looking at.

The kraft paper gives you the natural look customers expect. The PE layer on the inside helps keep moisture out and makes heat sealing possible.

For everyday packaging, that's often enough.

It also keeps the cost relatively manageable, which matters when you're ordering thousands of bags rather than a few hundred for a photo shoot.

One thing to keep in mind: PE-coated paper isn't a high-barrier solution. If your product is sensitive to oxygen, light or aroma loss, another structure may make more sense.

Good for: Bread and bakery products, takeaway food, frozen food outer packaging, dry goods and some lightweight industrial products.

For brands that mainly need a paper look, basic moisture resistance and a reasonable production cost, this is a practical place to start.

2. Kraft Paper + Aluminum Foil + PE Composite Bag

Material structure: Kraft Paper / AL / PE or Kraft Paper / PE / AL / PE, depending on the application.

Now we're talking about a very different level of protection.

Aluminum foil is used when keeping oxygen, moisture and light away from the product really matters. That's why you'll see foil-based structures in packaging for coffee, tea, powdered foods and other products where shelf life and product quality are closely tied to the package.

Kraft Paper Aluminum Foil PE Structure-DINGLI PACK

It can also help retain aroma. For coffee, that's a big deal. Nobody wants to open a fresh bag and find that the product has lost the character it had when it was packed.

The downside? A foil-based laminate is more complex than a simple paper + PE structure. That can make recycling more difficult, depending on the local system and the complete package design.

So don't automatically choose aluminum just because it offers the highest barrier. Use it when the product actually needs that level of protection.

Good for: Coffee beans, premium tea, milk powder, nutritional powders, specialty foods, pet food and dried products that need longer storage or long-distance shipping.

For coffee brands, our kraft paper coffee bags with valve are designed around this kind of product requirement, including the need for degassing after roasting.

3. White Paper + Aluminum Foil + PE/PET Composite Bag

Material structure: Around 200–350 gsm white paperboard + AL + PE, or white paper + PET/AL/PE.

Not every brand wants the brown kraft-paper look.

Sometimes you need a cleaner white surface because the artwork is doing a lot of the selling. Bright colors, detailed illustrations, fine text — all of that benefits from a good printing surface.

A white paper outer layer can give the package a more polished retail appearance, while the inner layers provide the protection the product needs.

White Paper Premium Packaging Structure-DINGLI PACK

It's a useful combination when the package needs to look premium as well as perform well.

You'll often see this type of approach in gift packaging, confectionery and other products where the package is part of the overall experience.

Good for: Chocolate, premium candy, cosmetics, specialty foods, gift packaging and other higher-end retail products.

If you like a lighter paper appearance but still want the practical stand-up pouch format, our white kraft stand up pouches are another option to consider.

4. Kraft Paper + VMPET Aluminized Film + PE Composite Bag

Material structure: Kraft paper + VMPET aluminized polyester film + PE inner layer.

Here's a common question: Do you really need aluminum foil?

Not always.

VMPET can be a useful middle option when you want some of the visual and barrier benefits of a metallic layer without going all the way to a foil structure.

The aluminized film gives the bag a shiny, metallic appearance and helps with light and moisture protection. Its barrier performance isn't the same as aluminum foil, but for many snacks and mid-range retail products, that may be perfectly fine.

Kraft Paper VMPET PE Packaging-DINGLI PACK

This is one of those cases where spending more doesn't automatically make the package better.

If the product doesn't need maximum barrier protection, a simpler structure can save money without changing much from the customer's point of view.

Good for: Puffed snacks, dried fruit, pet treats, tea and other everyday retail products.

It's a nice fit for brands trying to balance appearance, protection and packaging cost.

5. Paper + PET + PE Composite Bag

Material structure: Custom paper + approximately 12 μm PET + PE inner layer, depending on the application.

Sometimes the main problem isn't oxygen or light.

Maybe the bag needs to be a little stiffer. Maybe the product contains oil. Maybe you want strong graphics. Or maybe customers need to see what's inside.

A paper + PET + PE structure can help with several of these requirements at once.

PET adds toughness and helps the package hold its shape. The PE inner layer supports sealing and gives the package some resistance to moisture and grease.

A transparent window can also be built into some designs, which can be useful for food brands. Seeing the actual product can do something product photography can't always do — it makes the package feel a little more honest.

Paper PET PE Packaging with Window-DINGLI PACK

Of course, a window isn't always a good idea. If light protection is important, showing the product may work against you.

Good for: Baked goods, candy, snacks, takeaway food, frozen food and retail products where product visibility matters.

6. Kraft Paper + PP Woven Fabric + PE Composite Bag

Material structure: Kraft paper + PP woven fabric + PE inner film.

This one belongs in a different category altogether.

We're no longer talking mainly about shelf appeal. We're talking about heavy-duty packaging.

The woven PP layer provides the strength. Kraft paper gives the outside a printable paper surface, while the PE inner layer helps with moisture protection.

For heavy products, though, don't look at the material structure alone and assume a certain load capacity.

The actual result depends on the bag size, paper weight, woven fabric, seams, filling process, stacking and transportation conditions.

That's why a manufacturer should look at the whole package before confirming a specification.

Good for: Animal feed, fertilizer, cement, chemical raw materials, plastic pellets and other bulk industrial products.

If you're packing heavy material, this type of structure makes much more sense than trying to make a conventional paper bag stronger simply by adding more paper.

7. Kraft Paper + Bubble Film + PE Composite Bag

Material structure: Kraft paper outer layer + bubble film cushioning layer + PE inner layer.

What happens when moisture isn't your biggest concern — but dropping the package is?

That's where a cushioning layer comes in.

The bubble film helps absorb shocks and vibration during shipping. The kraft paper outside gives the package a cleaner, more finished appearance and provides space for branding or handling information.

For fragile products, this can be more important than adding a stronger barrier.

A broken cosmetic bottle or piece of glass isn't just a packaging problem. It's a replacement, a customer service issue, and sometimes a bad review.

Nobody wants to deal with that over a few cents of packaging cost.

Good for: Cosmetic bottles, glass products, ceramics, electronic accessories, delicate components and gift packaging.

8. Kraft Paper + PLA Laminated Bag

Kraft Paper PLA Compostable Packaging-DINGLI PACK

Material structure: Kraft paper + approximately 20–30 μm PLA-based coating or laminate, depending on the product and required certification.

For brands looking at compostable-oriented packaging, kraft paper + PLA is one structure worth discussing.

But this is also where it's important not to oversimplify things.

A PLA layer doesn't automatically make the entire package suitable for every composting system. Compostability depends on the complete package, the certification, and the conditions under which it will be disposed of.

That's especially important if you're selling in Europe or North America and plan to put environmental claims directly on the packaging.

The package should be assessed as a whole before making claims such as "compostable."

PLA also has its own processing and temperature limitations, so it isn't the right answer for every filling or storage condition.

Good for: Organic food, eco-focused brands, selected takeaway products, bath products and other applications where a compostable packaging route is part of the brand strategy.

Our biodegradable kraft paper bath salt bags are one example of this type of paper-based packaging approach.

Not sure which structure or features your product needs?

How We Recommend Choosing a Paper Packaging Structure

Still not sure which one you need?

That's normal. Most brands don't start a packaging project knowing exactly which laminate structure they want. They usually know the product, the look they're after, and roughly what they want to spend.

That's enough to get started.

Step 1 — What Are You Packaging?

Start here.

Is it coffee? Baked food? Pet treats? Powder? Cosmetics? A heavy industrial material?

Then look at the things that can affect the package: weight, moisture, oil, aroma, shelf life, filling temperature and shipping conditions.

A structure that works beautifully for coffee may be completely unnecessary for a short-shelf-life bakery product.

Step 2 — What Does the Product Need Protection From?

Think about the actual risks.

Product Concern Possible Packaging Approach
Moisture PE or another suitable inner barrier
Oxygen Higher-barrier laminate
Light Aluminum foil or aluminized film
Oil and grease Suitable inner film or coating
Impact Bubble film or structural reinforcement
Heavy weight Woven PP reinforcement

You don't need the strongest structure just because it's available.

You need the right level of protection.

Step 3 — What Kind of Appearance Do You Want?

This is where packaging becomes part of the brand.

Kraft paper works well for natural, handmade and craft-style positioning. White paper gives you a cleaner surface for strong colors and detailed graphics.

A metallic layer can add visual impact. A window can let customers see the actual product.

None of these is universally better. It depends on what you're selling and who you're selling it to.

If you're comparing paper packaging with other flexible packaging options, our guide on kraft paper or Mylar — which one truly fits your brand is a useful place to start.

Step 4 — What Are Your Sustainability Requirements?

This question has become much more complicated than simply asking, "Is it paper?"

A paper-based package can still contain plastic or aluminum layers.

A compostable package needs to be considered as a complete structure.

And whether a package can actually be recycled depends partly on the recycling system available in the market where it will be sold.

So before choosing a material, be clear about what you're actually trying to achieve.

Maybe it's lower plastic use. Maybe it's a recyclable structure. Maybe it's compostability. Or maybe the goal is simply to use less material overall.

Those are different targets.

Step 5 — What's Your Target Cost?

This part gets overlooked surprisingly often.

A package that costs a little less per unit can look attractive on a spreadsheet. But if it doesn't protect the product well enough, the savings won't mean much.

On the other hand, there's no reason to pay for a high-barrier structure if your product doesn't need it.

Good packaging isn't about choosing the most expensive structure. It's about getting the performance you actually need at a sensible cost.

More Layers Don't Always Mean Better Packaging

This is worth saying plainly because it comes up all the time.

More layers don't automatically mean better packaging.

If a bakery product only needs basic moisture protection, an aluminum barrier may add cost and complexity without doing much for the product.

But if you're packaging a product that's highly sensitive to oxygen or moisture, going with a basic paper + PE structure just because it's cheaper can create a much bigger problem later.

There's a balance.

The best structure is usually the one that solves the real problem without adding things you don't need.

Paper Packaging Structure Should Be Designed Around Your Business

When a brand comes to a packaging factory, the conversation shouldn't start and end with, "Which material do you have?"

The more useful questions are usually about the product.

How heavy is it?

How long does it need to stay fresh?

Does it contain oil?

Does it need a valve?

Will it travel overseas?

Does the customer need to see what's inside?

What kind of shelf presence are you after?

And, of course, what's the target packaging cost?

Those answers help determine the paper weight, film thickness, barrier level, bag size, printing method and sealing structure.

For example, thicker paper isn't automatically better. A thicker film isn't automatically necessary either.

Sometimes a simpler structure is the better choice.

For brands exploring different paper-based pouch formats, you can also look at our resealable stand up kraft paper pouches and custom aluminum paper pouches to see how different structures can be matched to different product needs.

Not Sure Which Paper Bag Structure You Need?

You don't need to have the final material specification worked out before you talk to a packaging manufacturer.

If you're still deciding which paper, thickness, barrier structure, size or finish makes sense, just start with what you know.

Tell us what you're selling, roughly how much goes into each bag, the size you're considering, how long the product needs to last, and what kind of look you're going for.

We'll help you narrow down the options instead of throwing a long list of materials at you.

And if you're not sure whether a structure will actually work, samples can help. You can hold the bag, test your filling process, check the seal, look at the printing and see how it feels in real use. That's a lot more useful than trying to make the decision from a material chart alone.

If you'd like to talk through your packaging requirements, contact our packaging team. Tell us what you're trying to solve, and we'll work backward from the product to find a practical structure for it.

Questions Brands Usually Ask

Can you help me choose between paper packaging and Mylar or foil packaging?
Yes. You don't need to arrive with a finished material specification. Tell us what you're packing, the fill weight, expected shelf life, shipping conditions and the look you're after. From there, we can compare paper-based structures with higher-barrier options and explain where each one makes sense. If your product doesn't actually need a heavy barrier, we'll tell you that too. The goal is to avoid paying for material performance you won't use.
Can I test the packaging before placing a larger order?
That's usually a good idea, especially when you're changing packaging for an existing product. We can provide standard samples for checking the structure, size, feel and basic functionality. If you need a custom sample with your artwork, that can also be discussed before bulk production. Testing the actual bag lets you check filling, sealing, shelf appearance and handling instead of making the decision from a material chart alone.
Is a custom paper pouch possible for a smaller product launch?
Yes. For brands testing a new SKU, seasonal product or new market, starting with a manageable production quantity can be more practical than committing to a very large run. XINDINGLI PACK lists custom pouch orders starting from 500 pieces on several packaging pages. The exact MOQ can still vary with the bag style, material structure, printing and finishing, so we'll confirm it based on your project rather than giving you a one-size-fits-all number.
Can you make the pouch match our existing brand design?
Yes. Custom packaging can be developed around your existing artwork, dimensions and brand style. You can also discuss finishes and functional details such as resealable zippers, tear notches, windows, hang holes or degassing valves where the product calls for them. If you don't have a final packaging specification yet, send the artwork and product information first. We'll help work out the practical packaging details around it.
What's the advantage of working directly with a packaging manufacturer?
The biggest difference is usually the communication. When the material structure, printing, bag construction and production are handled through the same manufacturer, there's less room for details to get lost between suppliers. It also makes technical questions easier to discuss. XINDINGLI PACK is HUIZHOU XINDINGLI PACK CO., LTD., a packaging manufacturer based in Huizhou, China, and the company handles custom pouch projects directly. That means you can discuss the product requirements with the team actually working around the packaging specification.
What should I send you if I want a packaging recommendation?
A rough brief is enough to start. Send the product type, approximate fill weight, bag dimensions if you have them, expected shelf life, preferred material or paper appearance, printing requirements and estimated order quantity. Photos of your current packaging can help too. You don't need to know every technical term — the more useful conversation is usually about what the package needs to do. From there, we can suggest a suitable structure, size and finish for your project.
